#11daysofremembrance - a community cenotaph / Memorial... Well, I'm giving myself a bit of creative liberty here. This is a snapshot of the St.Julien Canadian Memorial in Belgium. I took this shot back in 2010. The Brooding Soldier, rises at almost 11 meters and can be seen several miles around. It marks the tragic and heroic stand of Canadian soldiers during the First gas attacks of the First World War.
Much like the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, this memorial has always impressed me by the simplicity and clean lines of its design. The striking, strong and sad pose of the soldier imposes respect and remembrance.

Today, in Canada and around the world, we remember.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
written by Major (later Lieutenant-Colonel) John McCrae, a field surgeon in the Canadian artillery, in the midst of the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium, in May 1915.

My Grand Uncle - Fred McLellan Fansher (b. 04 Nov 1889, d. 31 Dec 1918)
He was a crack marksman and served as a sniper in France. He was wounded in the head at Passechendale, returned to Canada in September 1918 and later died as a result of his wounds.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
This is the fourth stanza from Laurence Binyon's poem “For the Fallen”. Referred to as the Ode of Remembrance, it was first published in The Times of London in September 1914.

At the 11th hour on November 11th, 1918, the First World War officially ended. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and commemorates Canada’s historically significant “Hundred Days”, which represents the last three months of the war. It was during this time that Canadians fighting on the Western Front solidified their reputation as brave soldiers. Today, Canadians at home and across the globe gather to pay tribute to the brave men and women, who died serving their country in all wars; as well as those who continue to protect the freedom we all enjoy.

Day 309 - on our evening walk tonight, at the recommendation of @polaroid_dreamer, we checked out the Edge of Peace exhibit at Confederation Park right now. A commemorative multimedia piece, to mark 100 years since the Armistice of the First World War; I would highly recommend passing through, if you have the chance #ottawa #igersottawa #ourcity #myottawa #confederationpark #canadaremembers #canada100days #commemorative #moongarden #light #sound #getoutdoors #getoutside #adventure #explore #explorecanada #canada #beauty
